Brooke Erin Posey

June 12, 1999 - March 16, 2017

Brooke is the youngest daughter of Marie Gregory (Todd) and Ernest Posey (Melissa), a long-time member of the Southern Yacht Club. Sadly, Brooke was killed in an automobile accident on March 16, 2017 at the age of 17.

Though young, Brooke truly lived life to the fullest. Brooke joined the Southern Yacht Club swim team, The Seagulls, at the age of four. Brooke began riding at the age of eight and had become an accomplished equestrian competing in horse shows across the country. She enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, and sailing/boating. Brooke loved music, festivals, and boy bands (especially One Direction).

More than anything, however, Brooke was defined by her love of family and friends. For Brooke, “family” was much more than just her immediate family members. She loved bringing her entire blended, bonus, beautiful family together including her two sisters, Lauren (Eric) and Megan. She enjoyed the love of her large, blended family with “bonus” siblings - Brandy (Chad), Shelby, Justin (Gabby), Mallory, and Lauryn. Cousins too numerous to name were more like siblings. And, though Brooke loved her older family members, she adored her younger cousins, niece and nephew. The littlest family members truly had her wrapped around their little fingers.

As long-time members of the SYC, the Posey family celebrated nearly every special occasion and milestone there. Before the accident, the “entire family” joined in celebrating baptisms, birthdays, Mother’s days, Father’s days, weddings, graduations, and more together. As such, it is only fitting that SYC is where the family still gathers to share memories and celebrate Brooke’s life.

The family’s connection to SYC made what happened next that much more special. Brooke's team mates from the SYC swim team dedicated the 2017 swim season in memory of her. The team’s swim caps and shirts read “Swim for Brooke.” Wanting to do even more, her coach, Bret, came up with the swim-a-thon idea. Team Mom, Elizabeth, and bonus mom, Melissa took the idea and ran.

The first Swim-a-Thon was held on July 29, 2017. What a day! Twenty-three swimmers showed up in support of Brooke. So heartfelt! As a portion of Brooke’s allowance was often donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, it was only fitting that it benefit from the proceeds of the event. Swimming a total of 1,291 laps, the team raised $8,757!

As the 2018 season approached, we knew that we wanted to continue the tradition in memory of Brooke. The Second Annual Brooke E. Posey Swim-A-Thon took place on June 16, 2018. The charity of honor was Thomas Morstead’s (punter for the New Orleans Saints) "What You Give Will Grow.” Thirty awesome swimmers tallied 1,807 laps and raised $13,848.

Come join us on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, Louisiana as we honor the memory of Brooke E. Posey and raise funds for a wonderful organization – the Children’s Advocacy Center, Hope House.
